The Premier of Limpopo Mr Stanley Chupu Mathabatha on Wednesday led his troupe of the Provincial Executive Council in the Back To School campaign across the province to evaluate the readiness of schools as inland schools reopened today.
Various Members of the Executive Council were deployed across the five districts of Vhembe, Mopani, Capricorn, Waterberg and Sekhukhune to visit high enrolled and poor performing schools at the start of the 2023 school year.
The Back To School campaign which kicked off on Wednesday and concludes on Friday, assesses the suitability of infrastructure like classrooms and ablution facilities, and other areas requiring intervention like the availability of stationery and text books, and the sufficiency of teachers.
Premier Mathabatha led the campaign by visiting schools in Sekhukhune East, Tubatse area. He was accompanied by the MEC of Education Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya and the Executive Mayor of the Sekhukhune District Maleke Mokganyetji.
COGHSTA MEC Basikopo Makamu kicked off his visit of four schools in the Vhembe district at Elim high school. MEC for Transport and Community Safety Florence was in Mogalakwena with the Deputy Minister of Basic Education Reginah Mhaule where they among other schools they visited Ben Hlongwane secondary school.
Meanwhile the MEC of Social Development Nandi Ndalane sustained serious injuries in a car crash outside Thabazimbi in the Waterberg district where she was deployed for the Back to School campaign. MEC Ndalane was with her driver and protector when her official vehicle overturned.
MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure Nkakareng Rakgoale visited Giyani schools in Mopani accompanied by Executive Mayor Pule Shayi, Greater Giyani municipality speaker Ernest Mboweni and councillors.
Members of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature and councillors also took part in this province-wide campaign to monitor the reopening of schools, in the spirit that education is a societal matter and therefore everybody’s business.
The visit to performing schools and special schools will take place after the release of the 2022 Matric Results by the national minister of Basic Education Angi Matsie Motshekga on 19 January 2023.
The programme continues tomorrow in the five districts and concludes on Friday.
On 19 January 2023 the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga officially announces the 2022 matric results. The matric class of 2022 bore the brunt of COVID-19 in their critical years of Grade 10 and Grade 12. It remains to be seen how the Covid-19 virus disruption affected their performance.
