The Mokoto family, a well-respected family within the Balobedu community, has expressed concern over the hosting of Princess Masalanabo Modjadji’s 18th birthday celebration outside of her homeland and birthplace, Ga-Modjadji.

The Princess, is currently embattled in a court case previously under the fostership of Dr. Mathole Motshekga, to become the next Rain Queen of the Balobedu people – a symbol of pride and unity for the Balobedu community. According to the esteemed family, the princess’s birthday celebration, a significant event in her life, should have been held in her homeland to honour not only her, but the Modjadji family’s legacy. Instead, the celebration is being held in Pretoria, a location that is far removed from the community that Princess Masalanabo stands in line to lead.

The Mokoto family believes that the decision to host the celebration in Pretoria is a clear indication of the disrespect shown to the Balobedu community and its culture. It is a significant departure from the tradition, celebrations honouring the princess and her family and other such celebrations should be hosted in her homeland. They have also expressed their dismay, that they were informed about the event at short notice.

“We are disappointed that Princess Masalanabo’s birthday celebration is taking place outside of her homeland, where she can be surrounded by her people and traditions,” said Mr. Nakampe Mokoto, the most senior member of the family. “We feel that this decision shows a lack of respect for our culture and traditions, and we hope that in the future, events such as this will be held within the community.”

The Mokoto family further believes their sentiments echo those of many within the Balobedu community, who feel that hosting significant cultural events outside of their homeland is a sign of disrespect to their culture and traditions. The Rain Queen is a significant figure in Bolobedu, and as such, any celebrations and traditional ceremonies pertaining to the Royal Family should be hosted in Ga-Modjadji.

The Mokoto family has called on the organisers of the event to explain the decision to host Princess Masalanabo’s birthday celebration in Pretoria, and hope that in the future, such events will be held within the Balobedu community, where the Princess can be surrounded by her people and traditions, for her culture and traditions can be honoured appropriately.
