Retire point guard, Gezani Khoza coaching young players.

Basketball’s very own a moral dilemma sees the sport walking a fine line between the importance of growing the game globally and ensuring that its biggest events don’t become mired in mediocrity.

With a degree of anxiety, Seshego Sonics opted to revive the game in their township and beyond by staging a celebratory tournament in honour of a living legend, Gezani Khoza.

The much-anticipated basketball festival is slated for October 28-29 at Seshego outdoor courts where men and women will display their true measure of physical and psychological flair.

The myriad players and followers who will be visiting Seshego for the two-day spectacle will be a perfect marketing platform to revive the game in the township.

Tournament organisers have alluded that they intend to stage this competition on an annual basis to grow the game’s footprint.

It is befitting that the basketball fraternity decided to honour this living legend while he’s still breathing and able to share his unrivalled perception of the slam and dunk.

The retired Seshego Sonics plucky point guard will be celebrated through a monumental tournament envisaged to feature some of the remarkable clubs from the length and breadth of the country.

Khoza is justifiably on cloud nine, humbled by the gesture of goodwill from the citizenry that sees him as some kind of demigod.

Overwhelmed by emotions, he said “It is quite fulfilling to be recognised for the work one has been doing over 30 years. It serves as a source of encouragement and motivation to do more for his community. My sole aim has always being to build strong men and women to shape the future of this country.”

Tournament director, HulisaniTshishonga has praisedhis predecessor as the livewire that that kept the basketball flame ablaze in many townships and villages in Limpopo.

Tshishonga said “Gazani is one of a special kind among the many legends we have in basketball. He has contributed a lot to the game in developing youngsters and some of them turned out to be national assets.  It is fitting that we honour him with a huge tournament so that his tireless efforts and undying spirit remain entrenched in basketball history books.”

Khoza’ sports CV read like poetry in motion for the icon who took South Africa to Botswana and won gold and silver in Mali.

His vice presidency at Basketball SA and Limpopo Sports Confederations treasurer are a clear confirmation of leader who always leads from the front.
