A foreign national spaza shop owner was shot and later died at Ndhambi village in Greater Giyani Municipal area on Wednesday night.

The deceased was positively identified as Mubarak Kamal (34), an Ethiopian national.

Police said that preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was shot by unknown attackers while walking to his home after closing his Spaza Shop at about 20:00.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said that afterwards, the victim called his brother who transported him to a local clinic and was later transferred to Nkhensani hospital where he passed on upon arrival.

Police were summoned to Nkhensani hospital and on their arrival found a medical practitioner who pointed out that the deceased sustained gunshot wounds on the upper body resulting in the sudden death.

The motive of the incident is unknown at the moment and police investigations are underway. The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has directed the police to work around the clock to ensure apprehension of those involved in the senseless killing.
