The euphoria of having an institution of higher learning in Mopani district is finally coming to fruition.
A step towards fulfilment of having a university campus in Giyani began on August 28, as the Greater Giyani Municipality and Tshwane University of Technology signed a permission to occupy (PTO).
The ceremony, witnessed by the Limpopo provincial government top officials, took place at Mowana Building, the Office of the Premier in Polokwane.
The signed agreement is for the construction of the new TUT Campus in Giyani.
This follows closely Premier, Phophi Ramathuba’s pronouncement during the recent opening of the 7th legislature that visible activities, leading to opening of the campus in 2025, will be pursued.
Vusi Khoza, the municipal manager of GGM said he appreciates the steps taken so far.
Khoza said “I echo the sentiments by the provincial government that the benefits of this agreement will go beyond having a university campus, but also create employment and improve the local economy.”
The monumental occasion was attended by representatives from government organisations, including the Department of Higher Education & Training, Department of Public Works, Roads, and Infrastructure, as well as the provincial legal team.
TUT vice chancellor, Dr. Nkgatho Tlale said preparations for the construction of the project will begin as soon as a security entity is appointed.
Tlale said online programmes are expected to be rolled out next year.
