Deputy President Paul Mashatile collapsed during his keynote address at the Annual Nwamitwa Day celebration held at the Valoyi Cultural Village outside Tzaneen on Saturday.
The event, attended by prominent dignitaries including Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, Mopani District Mayor Pule Shayi, and various deputy ministers, was held under sweltering heat.
The day began with a briefing at the Valoyi Royal Palace, Fofoza House, before the attendees proceeded to the Valoyi Cultural Village for the main ceremony. Speakers at the event paid tribute to the legacy of Hosi Nwamitwa II, the first female leader of the Valoyi Traditional Community, highlighting her leadership and cultural significance.
However, during Deputy President Mashatile’s address, he collapsed due to dehydration caused by the extreme heat. Medical personnel quickly attended to him, and he was escorted away for further treatment. The incident cast a shadow over the remainder of the event.
In a subdued conclusion, Her Royal Highness Hosi Nwamitwa II responded to the day’s speeches, expressing her gratitude for the support she has received since ascending the throne following the passing of her father, Hosi Nwamitwa I. Despite the unexpected disruption, she acknowledged the importance of the occasion and thanked the community for their continued backing.
Deputy President Mashatile’s condition was reported as stable later in the day, and organizers reassured the public that he had received medical attention and was well.
