The Limpopo Provincial Government is pleased to announce the upcoming construction of a state-of-the-art High-Tech Skills Development Centre in Nkomo Village, Giyani.
This initiative is set to provide essential skills and significantly boost the province’s economy.
Acting Premier, Basikopo Makamu, emphasised the government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive economy and prioritising job creation, with skills development being a crucial component. He made these remarks during the official handover of a 12.3-hectare construction site and sod-turning ceremony on 31 August 2024 at Nkomo village, Greater Giyani, Mopani District.
The project is an initiative of the Construction Education Training Authority SETA in partnership with AgriSETA, FP&MSETA and MerSETA who are collaborating on this Higher Education and Training infrastructure development project for Mahumani High-Tech Skills Development Centre (MHT-SDC).
This is one of the high-impact projects as showcased during the SETA Skills Summit held early this year. The CETA was designated to be the lead SETA on the MHT-SDC project. The MHT-SDC will be linked to Letaba TVET College on completion, said Chief Executive Officer of CETA, Mr Malusi Shezi.
Construction of the Mahumani Skills Centre is slated to commence in early September 2024, with the first phase expected to be completed over 24 months. This phase will include the development of an administration block, two libraries, a cultural centre, a farming model, a farming field, a piggery, and a chicken coop, among other facilities.
The centre will be built on land generously provided by Hosi Mahumani. “I want to thank all stakeholders for their collaboration in making this centre a reality,” said Hosi Mahumani. This initiative is a pivotal step in community transformation and exemplifies the strong working relationship with traditional leaders that the province values.
A construction company based in Limpopo will be appointed to undertake the project, which will cost no less than R250 million. Notably, 30% of the construction budget will be allocated to Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). The construction phase is expected to create over 250 jobs.
The Acting Premier, Makamu cautioned that those not selected for opportunities should not hinder the project’s progress. “We are committed to supporting this project through to its completion. Hosi Mahumani, you have our full support as the provincial government,” said Acting Premier Makamu.
“As the seven administration, we said one of our priority is inclusive economy and job creation. Already jobs that will be created on this contruction will be massive but also for people to access opportunities that requires skills,” added Makamu.
The state-of-the-art skills development centre will be constructed at an amount of not less than R250 million. The skills acquired will go a long way in bolstering the economy of the province.
In the beginning of the week the province was also a witness to a signing ceremony between Giyani Municipality and Tshwane University of Technology for the establishment of the university campus where the former Giyani College of Education was located.
