After Tzaneen United’s recent 1-1 draw against Thlothlokwe Golden Syrup in their ABC Motsepe League opener, Coach Oruel Sambo issued a warning to other teams not to underestimate newly promoted Thlothlokwe Golden Syrup. The match took place at Thlothlokwe’s home ground at Westfalia in Modjadjiskloof.
The last year’s Stream B champions started the game with high energy, eager to seize an early lead. However, Thlothlokwe’s defence held strong, as solid as “an ancient rock.”
They effectively employed a low-block strategy, making it difficult for the champions to find their footing, resulting in a goalless first half.
In the second half, Tzaneen United made tactical adjustments, adopting a more aggressive approach by pushing their fullbacks forward in search of goals. This shift, however, left gaps that Thlothlokwe exploited during counterattacks. The Syrup players began to appear increasingly threatening in Tzaneen’s half, although they struggled to convert their chances.
A brief lapse in Thlothlokwe’s defense allowed Tzaneen’s striker, Thulane Mbonani, to score first for the Maruleng-based side. Undeterred, Thlothlokwe responded fiercely, akin to “a wounded tiger.” They pushed more players forward and were rewarded with a stunning equalizer from Chris “Kaka” Moremi, who blasted a strike into the far-right corner.
This goal reignited the Syrup players, who maintained their momentum and created several scoring opportunities as the match drew to a close, though they failed to find the net again. Following the results, a disappointed Sambo voiced his dissatisfaction but remained hopeful about his team’s ability to bounce back.
“They executed their low block exceptionally well, staying compact in defence and being direct in attack when they regained possession. We left gaps on the flanks because we threw more players forward in the second half while trying to score, which opened the door for their counterattacks.”
Sambo recognized Thlothlokwe’s strength and determination, saying, “They showed tremendous hunger. Teams that underestimate them are in for a shock; they’re strong underdogs and can compete. Their energy is high, they’re ambitious, and they don’t fear anyone.”
Despite his disappointment, Sambo regarded the outcome as a valuable learning experience: “It’s never easy to face a team like that.” He wrapped up his comments by acknowledging the draw and expressing anticipation for their next game.
