Storm Damage in Collins Chabane.

In an important move reflecting the government’s commitment to support communities affected by natural disasters, MEC of COGHSTA Basikopo Makamu will visit the Collins Chabane Local Municipality on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.

The visit, scheduled for 14:00, aims to assess the devastation caused by recent heavy rains and thunderstorms, classified as yellow level 2 by the South African Weather Service.

The severe weather conditions have left a notable mark on the region, particularly impacting the areas of Mtititi, Jilongo, New Orleans, and Govhu villages. Reports indicate that 36 houses in wards 35 and 36 were severely damaged, with roofs torn from their structures. Additionally, eight individuals sustained injuries but have since been treated and discharged from medical facilities.

MEC Makamu’s visit will focus on evaluating the extent of damage and understanding the immediate needs of affected families. This first hand assessment will enable the government to formulate effective disaster relief strategies and implement plans for assistance in rebuilding efforts.

During his visit, MEC Makamu will engage directly with victims to gather personal accounts of the storm’s impact on their lives. These interactions will be crucial for shaping responsive recovery and support measures. Discussions will also address the adequacy of current disaster relief efforts and identify areas for improvement in infrastructure and emergency services.

Another key aspect of the visit will be promoting community safety and preparedness. MEC Makamu will collaborate with local authorities to enhance early warning systems, ensuring better readiness for such extreme weather events in the future.
