The South African Police Service in Limpopo has proposed an alcohol curfew for the upcoming festive season, calling for liquor outlets to close at midnight instead of the usual 2 am.
This suggestion was made by Deputy Provincial Police Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers during a stakeholder engagement session on liquor affairs.
Scheepers emphasized the need for stricter regulations, including adherence to noise control measures at licensed premises. He highlighted the significant role alcohol plays in contributing to crime and fatalities in the province, particularly during the holiday season.
“In December and January, we are seeing a lot of funerals in the province because people are not drinking responsibly during this time of the year,” said Scheepers .
The proposal has sparked discussions among liquor outlet owners, community members, and law enforcement agencies as efforts are being made to ensure a safer festive period for all.
Some have expressed concerns and outrage over the proposed changes.
Authorities are urging liquor outlets to cooperate and prioritize community safety by supporting the proposed changes ¹. The Limpopo police have pledged to clamp down on liquor law violations during the upcoming festive season, with a strong focus on curbing alcohol-related crimes and fatalities.
By implementing these measures, SAPS hopes to reduce crime and fatalities, making the holiday season more enjoyable for everyone in Limpopo.
