Thlothlokwe Golden Syrup delivered an impressive performance last Saturday, confidently holding the formidable Mpheni Defenders to a goalless draw at home in Mamanyoha Stadium. This match marked the third game under the new leadership of coach Moses “Pokker” Malatji, following the departure of former coach Earnest Mamanyoha, who struggled in the new league despite successfully promoting the team.
From the opening whistle, Thlothlokwe approached the game with determination and a winning mindset. With a strategic 4-3-3 formation, they matched their experienced opponents, who adopted the same style. Although many of their attacking efforts were met with resistance from Mpheni’s solid defense, Thlothlokwe showcased their tenacity and tactical prowess throughout the match.
In the second half, Mpheni Defenders intensified their search for a goal by bringing in key players like the talented Mpho Miya. However, Thlothlokwe’s well-organized defense stood firm, effectively neutralizing the attacking attempts. Mpheni came agonizingly close to finding a late winner during added time, but their shot struck the crossbar, showcasing Thlothlokwe’s resilience.
Coach Malatji expressed his pride in the team’s performance, declaring, “I am extremely pleased with how my boys played today. They executed our training well and displayed the improvements we’ve been working on. Now, we need to build on this performance and focus on securing wins moving forward.” He acknowledged that while Mpheni arrived with high expectations, they were met with Thlothlokwe’s relentless spirit and strong gameplay.
This match marked Syrup’s final battle of the year before the Christmas break, as their league campaign is set to resume in January. Currently sitting at the bottom of the standings with just 2 points from 9 games and trailing Winnerspark by 5 points, Thlothlokwe will face Winnerspark in January at Giyani Xikokwana Stadium.
