Medingen-born middle-distance runner Prudence Sekgodiso has been nominated for the prestigious Athlete Personality of the Year award by Athletics South Africa (ASA).
The award, which will be presented at a ceremony on January 25 at Montecasino in Johannesburg, recognizes the country’s top athletes from 2024.
Sekgodiso, who won the 800m gold medal, is currently leading the public vote by a significant margin of 1,541 votes. She is up against a talented pool of athletes, including Akani Simbine, Adriaan Wildschutt, and Gerda Steyn.
The nomination has left Sekgodiso feeling honoured and fulfilled. “I’m really honored to have been nominated for the ASA Awards,” she said. “For me, it’s a feeling of self-fulfillment, and it also shows what I actually put in last year.”
Sekgodiso’s impressive performance in 2024, which included winning two Diamond League races and making the 800m final at the Olympics in Paris, has earned her a spot among the country’s top athletes.
The ASA Awards ceremony will take place on January 25, where the winners will be announced. Sekgodiso’s nomination is a testament to her hard work and dedication to her craft, and she is thrilled to be recognized among the best of South Africa.
“I’m delighted to be nominated among the best of South Africa, who represented our country last year at the Olympics,” Sekgodiso said.
