The province’s sports personalities and organisations from different sporting codes were given awards for their exceptional achievements during the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s Provincial Sport and Recreation Awards, held at Meropa Casino in Polokwane on Saturday, under the theme “30 Years of Sport Excellence: Celebrating Limpopo’s Finest”.

This annual event seeks to recognise, reward and celebrate sportspersons for iconic and meritorious service in sports.

Among the winners was Monica Mathonsi, a dedicated and passionate individual, has been a driving force behind various community development initiatives in the region. Her selfless commitment to volunteering has inspired countless young people to embrace sports as a means of personal growth and social cohesion.

As she accepted the award, Monica was visibly moved by the recognition. “I am truly humbled to receive this honour,” she said. “Volunteering has given me a sense of purpose and fulfillment. I am grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact in my community.”

The Limpopo MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Jerry Maseko , commended the recipients for a job well done and urged them to continue to use sports as a catalyst for change in their lives and communities.

“In celebrating our athletes tonight, we are not only honouring them for their victories but for their embodiment of the values that have guided our nation through 30 years of democracy. They are a living testament to the power of sport in shaping our society and fostering the kind of unity and pride that binds us together, “he said.

“To all our nominees, winners, coaches, and supporters—this evening is for you. Your dedication and your passion inspire us all, and you are living proof of the incredible potential that exists within our province. You have made Limpopo proud, and you continue to pave the way for the next generation of athletes who will follow in your footsteps, “he added.
