University of Limpopo and Moletjie-based Rockers were crowned Polokwane Volleyball Association (POLVA) champions in the women and men’s categories respectively during the play-offs, staged at Mentz village outside Turfloop on Saturday.

POLVA chairman, Tlou Sekwaila described the play-offs as a stepping stone and a step in the right direction towards volleyball’s transformation agenda.

“The event over the weekend was one of the greatest development games that provided us with a glimmer of hope that volleyball is heading towards its desired destination. We are hopeful that as these teams ascend to the district leagues, they will gain lots of insight and become the game’s ambassadors” said Sekwaila.

Rockers men and UL ladies both showed their technical skills with some great saves and long rallies in these hotly contested play-offs.

Meanwhile, JSM and MSA had to settle for third and fourth spots in the men’s division while Moletjie Sports Academy and Kgabopark wrapped up for the third and fourth positions respectively.

Since the commencement of the local league program held atKgabopark in Moletjie, Rockers in particular, have dominated the beating heart of the realm of this star-studded league.

The sporting extravaganza continued with unmatched intensity at Laasthoop amid scenes of unconfined delirium.

On the court of play, there was bravado and bravura from players who were well armed – they were both brainy and brawny.

The psychological aspects and physical intensity were the stuff of volleyball brilliance.

They executed their game plan with attention to detail and attacked with frightening ferocity.

After all the rollercoaster of passion and fury on court, the abovementioned teams will ascend to the Capricorn district league where the standard of play is diferent ballgame altogether.

On their quest for glory, UL ladies took an early lead and dominated for the first set with some strong hitting for a comprehensive victory.

They showed good structured play and defence to reinforce their preparations for the upcoming students’ games which are played on an annual basis.

With their psychological intelligence, the students outplayed their opponents with versatility and blocking strength to keep their rival from gaining any real traction in all the game sets.

Rockers took the first set with quick movement and distribution of the ball around the court.

This unit played some excellent defence on the backcourt to save a number of balls.

UL came out firing from the first point and dominated this inaugural match for the women’s competition.

MSA struggled with the pace and strength of attack and found it difficult to get the ball back, losing the game when it mattered most.

Both teams tested each other out in the first set trying to find spaces in the back court and scoring with powerful cross court hits.
