The Greater Tzaneen Mayor’s Cup is back and this time is even better.
This after the five star event which was started in 2009 as a joint venture with sports confederation was later discontinued in 2018. This time around the event, whose strategic focus is to reconstruct and revitalize the delivery of sport and recreation towards building an active and winning nation, is designed to cater for a larger range of activities including marathon and Ncuba/moruba.
In the past, the event was only focusing on development soccer. The new activities included in this year’s event comprises of ladies soccer, netball, masters soccer and workers soccer.
According to the tournament rules, all participating teams in the soccer development competition must be residents of Greater Tzaneen Municipality and must be under the age of 21. The masters teams, however must be 40 years and above while there is no age restrictions for workers soccer teams. Nevertheless the workers must be male and females whose institution or business is based within the GTM.
The marathon which is dubbed the Mayor’s Marathon will accommodate any interested participant including international athletes. It will be a 10 and 21 km marathon and will include a fun walk.
All the development soccer teams are expected to pay a commitment fee of R200 while the workers and the masters will pay R200 per code. Moreover, the entry fee for the 21km marathon is R180 with license and temporary license is R40. For the 10km race the entry fee is R100 with a license and temporary license is R40. The fun walk is R30 and there is no license required.
The Tournament will be played in a knockout format and will run from the wards level, Cluster level and Municipality level. The Winners of the Clusters will proceed to the municipality finals to take place on the 09th of December at Nkowankowa Stadium.
Soccer and Netball clubs who will emerge as cluster winners will each receive R1000 plus a new kit while in the municipality final they will receive a whooping R10 000 first price, a trophy, 15 bibs, a ball and 20 medals. The runners-up will each receive R5000, 20 silver medals and a ball. Third and fourth position will each receive R500 and a ball. The champions of the workers and the Masters tournament will each receive a new soccer kit, Trophy, 15 bibs, 20 gold medals and a ball while the runners-up will each receive silver medals and a soccer ball. The winners of Ncuba/Moruba will take home R4000 first price, trophy and eight gold medals while the runner-up will pocket R2000 and eight silver medals.
The third and fourth place will each receive a consolation prize of R500. The marathon prizes are as in the chart below.
