The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mopani Zone 1 has embarked on a joint Sports Against Crime initiative with a friendly soccer game against the Department of Health played at Letaba Estate in Nkowankowa to spread the message against crime, Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).

Their game took place last Wednesday and the SAPS emerged as winners by a 1-0 score. The solitary goal was scored by Constable Noble Shikwambana of Maake SAPS.

The game was organized by secretary of the Limpopo Provincial Men for Change Sgt Maurice Nkhwashu and Mopani District Sports organiser Cst Makhubele. Sergeant Nkwashu said they came up with the initiative to deal with the scurge of gender based violence and femicide because most men don’t speak when they have challenges.  “We reach out to them through sports” he said.

They have initiated a departmental league to this effect. Some of the teams in the league include Department of Water Affairs, Health, Education, Public Works and Department of Transport and Public Safety. Their league games take place on Wednesdays.
