A scholar transport driver was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping a five year-old girl.

According to a police report, the incident took place on Monday, 08 April 2024, at Hlabine village in Maake policing area. A 39-year-old suspect appeared in the Naphuno Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, facing a charge of rape and his case was postponed to Thursday 18 April for formal bail application

Police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the suspect reportedly raped the child after picking her up from school. He reportedly dropped off the other children as usual, and instead of taking the victim straight home, he parked on the side of the road and raped her inside the vehicle.

The suspect, afterward, threatened the victim not to report the incident, but upon arrival at home, she informed her mother. A case of rape was opened, which was transferred to the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offenses Unit for further investigation. The suspect was arrested at his residence in Hlabine village.
