Kaizer Chiefs U19 team was crowned champions of the Killer Ocean Swallows tournament at Nkowankowa stadium on Saturday.

The Kaizer Chiefs Under-19 team made an unforgettable impact at the inaugural Killer Ocean Swallows Cup, showcasing their extraordinary talent and skill at Nkowankowa Stadium on Saturday.

Organized by local soccer development stalwart Gideon “Killer” Modiba of Killer Ocean Swallows in Lenyenye township, the event provided local players with the chance to display their abilities to the Kaizer Chiefs Scouts while competing against strong opponents.

Under the guidance of Giyani-born legend David “DVD” Mathebula and Tshidiso Letsolonyane, the young Phefeni Glamour Boys delivered outstanding performances. They achieved resounding victories against Phalaborwa (9-1) and Killer Ocean Swallows (7-0), captivating the crowd with their exceptional skills, cohesive play, precise passing, and strategic movements.

Star players for Chiefs, such as 18-year-old Vicky Mkhawane from Dan Village, Refentse Kgosana, and skilled winger Makubo Matlala, impressed the audience with their remarkable abilities.

Matlala’s composure and maturity on the field, evident in his dribbling and well-timed passes, earned him the Player of the Tournament award. Moreover, the team’s talented striker Ofentse Kgosana secured the top goal scorer award, while goalkeeper Thakalane Mashamba received the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award for keeping a clean sheet.

The tournament followed a round-robin format and concluded with Kaizer Chiefs being crowned champions, receiving the Trophy and gold medals. Ocean Swallows and Phalaborwa Squad were awarded silver and bronze medals as runners-up and third-place winners, respectively. Swallows finished with 3 points after winning only one game against Phalaborwa Squad who lost all their two games.

Tournament organizer Gideon “Killer” Modiba praised Kaizer Chiefs for accepting their invitation. He expressed excitement that local boys had the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of Kaizer Chiefs scouts. He thanked Ritluka Mining Company and Kgosihadi Consulting Engineers for their support in bringing Kaizer Chiefs to Tzaneen. He also expressed gratitude to local supporters, players’ parents, and the Greater Tzaneen Municipality for their support.” According to “Killer ” the tournament will take place annually with a possibility of the Soweto derby next year.
