In a moment that will be etched in her memory forever, Lebogang Sibindi from Mapaana-village in Ga-Kgapane was overcome with emotion as she received three esteemed awards at the recent University of Limpopo, Sports and Recreation Excellence Awards held on Thursday, 24 October 2024. Sibindi’s exceptional talent, dedication, and passion for netball have earned her the recognition she so rightly deserves.
Sibindi’s journey to success began when she first explored athletics, but it was her discovery of netball that truly ignited her passion for the sport. Joining the local netball team, Madumeleng Mighty Queens, marked the beginning of her ascent to greatness. Through hard work, perseverance, and a willingness to learn, Sibindi rose through the ranks, eventually catching the attention of the Mopani district Netball team.
The University of Limpopo, Sports and Recreation Excellence Awards ceremony was a testament to Sibindi’s outstanding achievements in the sport. She was honored with the prestigious titles of Sport Colours, Full Colours, and University Sports South Africa (USSA) Medalist Awards. These accolades are a reflection of her tireless efforts, unwavering commitment, and unrelenting passion for netball.
As she looks back on the moment she received the three prestigious awards, she can’t help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. The 23-year-old netball star marks the experience as the most unforgettable in her life, and for good reason.
“The three awards mean a lot to me,” she said, her voice filled with emotion. “Throughout my netball career, I have never gotten an individual award to demonstrate my hard work and determination in this sport. Getting those honours the other day felt more like finally being noticed and having my hard work rewarded.”
Sibindi’s journey to success has not been without its challenges. She has faced broken bones, gruelling training sessions, and countless sacrifices, both on and off the court. But through it all, she has remained determined and focused on her goals.
“All of the broken bones, training sessions, sacrifices, money, and restless nights eventually paid off,” she said, her eyes shining with tears. “The awards define the essence of my existence. It taught me that while it may take a while and be difficult, you will inevitably reap what you sow.”
With boundless potential and unwavering determination, Sibindi stands poised to leave an indelible mark on the world of netball and her academics. Her story is a testament to the power of hard work, perseverance, and dedication, and serves as an inspiration to anyone who has ever dreamed of achieving greatness.
