MEC MAKAMU URGES RESIDENTS TO EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION DURING THE HEATWAVE
The MEC for Limpopo Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements & Traditional Affairs, Basikopo Makamu is making a clarion call to the residents of Limpopo to take precaution during the heatwave that is currently taking place in most parts of the province.
The MEC Makamu advises residents to stay vigilant and to adhere to weather forecasts warnings that are broadcast on media on a daily basis. He is further appealing to residents to stay in cool, shaded areas especially during peak hours. “We are calling on the people of Limpopo to prioritise their safety during the heatwave. Our Disaster Management Team is always on standby to attend to emergencies that may occur and provide assistance where needed”. According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), a heatwave wave is expected over the Northern and Central parts of KwaZulu-Natal but expected to persist over the Lowveld of Mpumalanga and Southern Lowveld of Limpopo.
Tips to survive during a heatwave:
*Wear lightweight, light coloured, loose clothes.
*Avoid strenuous activities when the outside temperature is high.
*Do not leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
*Avoid direct sunlight, especially between 11am and 15:00 in the afternoon.
*Those who work directly in sunlight should take regular breaks because exposure to extreme hot temperatures can cause heat exhaustion, heat cramps which might lead to head stroke.
*Drink sufficient water as often as possible.
*Elderly people should avoid strenuous activities and long walks in the heat.
*Wear hats and apply sunscreen.
*Children should not play outside during peak heat.
