Judge and gavel in courtroom

The Limpopo Polokwane High Court today convicted and sentenced Thabiso Fortunate Moloi (28), of Dennilton to life imprisonment for the murder of his ex-girlfriend.

The court heard that on 22 November 2020, in Magakadimeng village Dennilton, the deceased Hlengiwe Lisbeth Mahlangu was on her way home with her boyfriend when they met Moloi who produced a golf stick.

In an attempt to calm Moloi down, the victim requested her boyfriend to excuse them to speak to the accused and the following morning, the victim was found dead where her boyfriend left her and the accused.

The accused was arrested upon discovery of the body of the deceased. The cause of death of the deceased was determined to be asphyxia due to external neck compression and strangulation.

In aggravation of the sentence, the state advocate Elelwani Mufamadi submitted that the offence was premeditated and is prevalent within the jurisdiction of the court.

The violence between women and men is increasing and the court must put an end by putting the perpetrators in jail. The prosecutor further said that there are no substantial or compelling circumstances for the court to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence.

“The National Prosecuting Authority is against the violence of women and children, we hope that the perpetrators of this crime will learn from the sentence imposed. We further commend the good work done by adv. Mufamadi and investigating officer, Sergeant Martin Kgabo Mohlola from Dennilton police station,” said Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, NPA Regional Spokesperson for Limpopo Division.
