In a thrilling display of sportsmanship and community unity, Stone FC from Ward 10 emerged victorious in the in the men’s category of the 2024 Mayor’s Tournament held at Maruleng Showground last Sunday.

The intense final match saw Ward 10 defeating Ward 6 3-2 in a nail-biting penalty shootout, securing their place as champions of Maruleng Municipality.

Former Premier Soccer League (PSL) players Edward ‘Magents’ Motale, Arthur ‘10111’ Zwane, and Vicent Kobola graced the event with their presence, adding an extra layer of excitement and prestige to the tournament.

Despite the absence of goals during regular play, both teams displayed exceptional skill and determination, captivating the audience with their impressive performance. As the match went into penalties, the tension reached its peak, with each team vying for the coveted title.

In a post-match statement, Maruleng Mayor Councillor Tsheko Musolwa highlighted the significance of using sports as a platform for community development and youth empowerment. “Very important to have social cohesion…we have seen what sports has done in 1996 and 2010,” Mayor Musolwa emphasized, underscoring the role of sports in fostering unity and nation-building.

The Mayor’s Tournament not only provided an opportunity for friendly competition but also served as a means to engage the youth positively and steer them away from negative influences. The people’s Mayor Musolwa reiterated the municipality’s commitment to promoting a united sub-region and municipality through initiatives like the tournament.

The champions, Ward 10, celebrated their victory with pride, walking away with a cash prize of R5000, soccer kit, and medals, while the runners-up, Ward 6, received R3000 and silver medals for their commendable efforts on the field.

The success of the Mayor’s Tournament reflects the collaborative efforts of the community, local authorities, and esteemed figures like Motale, Zwane, and Kobola. By harnessing the power of sports, Maruleng Municipality continues to foster a sense of belonging and solidarity among its residents, paving the way for a brighter future for generations to come.

In the Elderly ladies soccer category, Maruleng won 2-0 against lephalale. Sophie Malatji netted a brace to elevated her team to the top position.

In elderly men’s category, Maruleng suffered a 3-2 defeat against Greater Tzaneen team from Nkowankowa.

Bokhalva won the netball category following a30-13 thrashing of Motherwell.

All the teams which reached the finals and semi-finals in various categories were all rewarded for their efforts with cash prizes, kits, soccer balls and medals.
