ABC Motsepe league side Mpheni Defenders has established themselves as a formidable force in South African football after convincingly defeating National First Division side Hungry Lions 3-1at Thohoyandou stadium last Sunday.
This impressive victory secures them a matchup against Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants Mamelodi Sundowns in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup competition. The Elim-based club is making a strong return to the country’s premier cup tournament after qualifying two years ago and demonstrated their prowess by decisively overcoming a Hungry Lions team that recently drew 1-1 with Baroka.
Mpheni’s strategy was expertly executed, focusing on neutralizing the Lions’ dangerous right flank while exploiting their weaknesses during set pieces. This approach bore fruit, with two goals scored directly from set pieces. Dominating the midfield was their standout player, Sandile Nyundu, who showcased his talent throughout the match.
With this win, Mpheni has advanced to the second round of the competition, ready to take on the renowned Mamelodi Sundowns. While many pundits may doubt their chances, team owner and coach Sydwell Phuravhathu confidently asserts that his side possesses a legitimate opportunity to surprise the PSL champions.
“Of course, we respect Sundowns; they are the African Giants. However, we are not going to the match merely to defend or observe. We are there to compete fiercely. It’s worth noting that they haven’t been at their best lately,” he stated.
The assertive coach cited Sundowns’ recent performance against ABC Motsepe league side Sibanye Golden Stars as a source of motivation. While “Ka Bo Yellow” won that match 5-2, the amateur team managed to breach Sundowns’ defense twice, pointing to vulnerabilities the Defenders aim to exploit.
“Sibanye scored two goals against them, and we believe we can do the same. If we can find the back of the net one or two times, we’ll tighten our defense and secure the victory. They are human beings just like us, and those players had their own paths before joining Sundowns,” he remarked.
“We are fully focused on our upcoming league games to prepare for the clash against Sundowns. Our We aimdeliver our best performance with intense movement, speed, and agility,” he concluded with determination.
Currently, Mpheni stands confidently in sixth place in the league table with 16 points from nine games. They are poised to face Winnerspark, who are struggling in the league, this Saturday at the Xikokwana stadium in Giyani.
