Charles Mathonsi Secondary won the senior phase category of the most environmentally affluent schools-2024.

The top achieving schools were awarded prizes by Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism MEC, Tshitereke Matibe on Wednesday.

MEC Matibe, hailed the top achieving schools of the 2024 Limpopo Green Schools For Earth Programme Awards as the flag bearers of the Limpopo government’s environmental awareness and literacy efforts.

From a total of 75 schools that participated this year, the MEC awarded 15 at Foundation Phase (Grade 3), Intermediate Phase (Grade 6), Senior Phase (Grade 9) categories. At the helm of the winner’s circle for 2024, is Ramakgoto Primary School, Mmusi Nareadi Primary schools, Charles Mathonsi Secondary topping the lists.

MEC Matibe said that programmes such as these are vital for the broad environmental sustainability development efforts as they enhance environmental learning, awareness, knowledge, literacy, skills, values & commitments through educators, learners and community empowerment.

Participating learners are tested and sharpened in their ability to identify, interpret, recognize and find possible solutions to issues and risks in their immediate environment.

“This is an important programme for Limpopo because it builds learners’ confidence and births environmental ambassadors. In addition, this programme has seen the planting of vegetable gardens that have grown to feed communities, and in some instances, make it to local vegetable markets creating part time jobs and revenue,” said MEC Matibe.

Through the programme, Limpopo has been nationally recognised as one of those with the best provinces in schools environmental awareness programmes.

The MEC has instructed that the Limpopo Green Schools  For Earth Programme is equipped to become grander ahead of the 2025 instalment of the awards.
