Traditional leaders from Sekhukhune.

Deputy President Shipokosa Paulus Mashatile is scheduled to visit Limpopo Province this coming Friday, 12 June 2026, to lead a high-level government delegation in a critical engagement with traditional leaders.

The high-stakes meeting will be hosted at The Ranch Hotel in Polokwane, situated within the Capricorn District.

According to a media statement released by the Presidency, the visit forms part of the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthen the institution of traditional leadership and to foster sustainable collaboration between the state and rural communities.

A Legacy of Cooperation

Deputy President Mashatile approaches this strategic engagement as the chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Task Team on Traditional Leadership. The task team was originally established by President Cyril Ramaphosa to create a direct line of communication between the state and Traditional and Khoi-San leaders.

In executing this mandate, Mashatile continues the work of the late Deputy President David Mabuza, who previously managed the complex challenges facing traditional authorities and laid the groundwork for government cooperation with indigenous structures.

Critical Issues on the Table

The agenda for Friday’s session reflects pressing socio-economic realities in Limpopo. Key areas of focus will include:

*Institutional Support: Evaluating direct government assistance and resources allocated to traditional councils.

*Social Challenges: Developing joint strategies to combat systemic social ills currently confronting local communities.

*Intergovernmental Interface: Streamlining how traditional leaders interact with both local municipalities and provincial departments to improve rural development.

*Economic Renewal: Identifying paths for local economic development and much-needed employment opportunities.

*Land Reform: Assessing the progress made in accelerating the country’s ongoing land reform programme within the province.

The engagement is expected to bring together senior traditional authorities, provincial leadership, and various government ministers to ensure that local governance and ancestral leadership operate with a unified development plan.
