Greater Tzaneen Municipality Mayor Odas Ngobeni hit the ground running on Friday, leading a packed schedule focused on district planning, municipal accountability, and direct hands-on service delivery.
Accompanied by key leadership, including the Speaker of Council, the Whip of Council, and Members of the Executive Committee, Mayor Ngobeni spent his day working directly for the local community. The Mayor has quickly become a prominent and highly visible public representative, transforming municipal operations and communications into a precise machine that keeps the local government active and responsive.
Morning District and Municipal Meetings
The Mayor’s busy schedule kicked off at 09:00 at the Mopani Disaster Centre in Tzaneen. There, Mayor Ngobeni attended the Mopani District Municipality Integrated Development Plan (IDP) Representative Forum. This meeting brought regional leaders together to align strategic development plans, ensuring that the community receives targeted funding and targeted growth programs.
Following the regional session, team Ngobeni returned to the municipal heart of Tzaneen. At 11:00, the delegation convened inside the GTM Council Chambers for the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Provincial Week Report Back Session. The debriefing allowed local leadership to evaluate recent interactions with national policy makers and review key legislative progress affecting local governance.
Afternoon Hands-On Oversight
By 14:00, the Mayor shifted focus from boardroom strategy to practical infrastructure fixes. Joined closely by Councillor Conny Ramothwala, the Head of Infrastructure, the leadership team traveled to Florapark.
At Florapark, Mayor Ngobeni personally monitored operations for the patching of potholes. Direct oversight on road repairs remains a central part of the Mayor’s commitment to improving basic service delivery across all municipal wards. Councillor Ramothwala, key to driving infrastructure delivery, worked alongside the Mayor during the site inspection to ensure municipal workers met required road repair standards.
Looking Ahead to the Weekend
Friday’s local activities mark just the beginning of a major political weekend for the municipal leadership. Following his local duties in Tzaneen and Flora Park, Mayor Ngobeni travels to Johannesburg.
On Saturday, the Mayor is set to attend the official ANC Mayoral Candidates Announcement. The political weekend culminates in Johannesburg with the official launch of the ANC 2026 Local Government Elections Manifesto.
Since taking office following the removal of former mayor Gerson Molapisane, Mayor Ngobeni has cemented his position as the municipality’s top citizen. His daily program reflects a strong drive to mix high-level political strategy with visible, on-the-ground work for the people of Greater Tzaneen.
