Mpho Miya, a former attacking midfielder for Mpheni Defenders, is on the verge of a significant career breakthrough as his agent negotiates a move to Botswana Premier League powerhouse Township Rollers ahead of the new season.
Miya, originally from Welkom in the Free State, parted ways with the ABC Motsepe League club midway through the current campaign due to limited playing time. Since his departure, he has been working on maintaining his fitness with Free State side Sibanye Golden Stars, who recently gained national attention during their impressive Nedbank Cup run, which ended in the Round of 32 against DStv Premiership giants Mamelodi Sundowns in January.
While he awaits his official clearance from Mpheni Defenders, the 24-year-old has attracted international interest through his agent, with Township Rollers emerging as the front-runners for his signature. Miya was previously linked with another Botswana Premier League club, Security System, but the move to Rollers now seems more likely.
In an exclusive interview, Miya expressed optimism about finalizing the deal next month. “I’m hopeful everything will be sorted by next month. Township Rollers is a big club with a lot of ambition, and it would be a great step for my career,” he said.
This potential move comes at a crucial time for Rollers. The Gaborone-based club currently sits fourth in the Botswana Premier League table with 46 points from 24 matches, just two points behind league leaders Jwaneng Galaxy. With six games remaining, Rollers are firmly in the title race, and winning the league would secure qualification for next season’s CAF Champions League.
For Miya, eager to revive his career after a frustrating stint with limited minutes at Mpheni Defenders, joining a club of Township Rollers’ caliber—and the chance to compete on the continental stage—represents a dream opportunity.
More details are expected to emerge as the season draws to a close and the transfer window officially opens.
