R 25 Million Mavalani Indoor Sports Centre, a new hub for sports development in Giyani.

The Greater Giyani Local Municipality has completed the R25 million Mavalani Indoor Sports Centre, a groundbreaking facility in the municipality.

This project showcases the municipality’s commitment to harnessing the power of sports to develop and enhance the lives of children and young people in deep rural areas.

The centre, which began construction in November 2022, is poised to provide  unique opportunities for kids in Mavalani and surrounding villages to learn and develop skills in various sports, including tennis, volleyball, netball, and basketball.

The completion of the Mavalani Indoor Sports Centre marks a significant milestone for the municipality, which has faced challenges in delivering sports facilities in the past. The R6 million Homu Sports Centre, one of the municipality’s longest-stalled projects, was finally completed and handed over in May 2024. The Mageva Sports Centre also faced delays, with an additional R1 million allocated to extend the pitch due to community complaints.

Despite these challenges, the municipality remains committed to providing sports facilities in deep rural communities.

Municipal spokesperson Steven Mavunda says the municipality is on track to completing other sporting facilities, including the Section E sports centre. This demonstrates the municipality’s dedication to promoting sports development in rural areas.

The Mavalani Indoor Sports Centre is set to become a hub for sports development in the area, providing a platform for young people to develop their skills and pursue their passions. With its state-of-the-art facilities, the centre is poised to make a positive impact on the lives of children and young people in Mavalani and surrounding villages.
