Local Xitsonga traditional music singer Annah Hlongwana, known by her stage name Sister-S, captivates audiences with her distinctive voice and vibrant performances rooted in Tsonga culture.

As she approaches her 50th birthday on May 17, the beloved artist is preparing to record her second album, following the release of her debut album, “Rifhumelo”, in 2024.

Sister-S—whose Xitsonga name is Sasavona—resides in Bridgeway, near Lenyenye Township in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality. The 49 year old’s musical journey began in 2016 while she worked as a security officer at Letaba Hospital.

Known for her lively singing and dancing at the hospital entrance, she enchanted nurses and colleagues alike, gradually capturing the hearts of many. Her growing popularity soon led to performances at weddings and parties, where her spirited renditions brought joy to even more listeners.

Encouraged by nurses who recognized her talent, Sister-S recorded her first album, “Rifhumelo”, produced at Themba Manganyi Recording Studio. One of the standout tracks, “Khumbule Khaya,” tells the poignant story of a woman pleading with her absent husband to return home. Despite her desperate calls, he dismisses her attempts, claiming a wrong number, which leads her to threaten involving the well-known SABC TV lost-persons show, “Khumbul’ekhaya”.

Deeply inspired by her love for Xitsonga music, Sister-S writes all her songs herself. Her music not only entertains but also conveys strong messages.

Now, as she prepares to record her second album next week in Giyani, Sister-S’ music continues to be a cherished feature at parties and weddings throughout the region.
