Blessing “Messi” Mahasha, the energetic defensive midfielder from Kgapane Township, says his side Polokwane City is ready to shock Orlando Pirates in their DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) encounter this Saturday at Mafori Mphahlele Stadium in Lebowakgomo.
Mahasha, known for his composure and game intelligence, believes that their recent loss against Siwelele last weekend could actually work in their favour. “Pirates will judge us by our performance against Siwelele, and that will give us a chance to pounce,” he said confidently. “I have played against Pirates before; they are a good side, but I believe we can surprise them.”
The former Jomo Cosmos midfielder joined Polokwane City last season from an ABC Motsepe League side. His experience has brought both stability in defence and creativity going forward, with his ability to read the game and deliver decisive passes that create scoring opportunities for his teammates.
Mahasha’s football journey has already earned him praise from respected figures in South African football. His former mentor, Jomo Sono, once compared him to the late Sizwe Motaung and Lucky Mhlathi after he helped Cosmos U-23 beat two Dubai clubs — Leo FC (2–1) and Dubai City FC U-23 (5–0) — during their 2022 international friendlies.
In 2023, Mahasha’s consistent performances saw him crowned Jomo Cosmos Young Player of the Season. Sono described him as a fearless and intelligent player, saying: “Blessing is a good player. Don’t be fooled by his short height and small body size — he tackles bigger players. With more experience, he has the potential to be great like Sizwe Motaung and Lucky Mhlathi.”
As Polokwane City prepare to take on the high-flying Buccaneers, Mahasha’s confidence and leadership could be key in inspiring his side to one of the biggest upsets of the DStv Diski Challenge season.
