In the quiet village of Mametwa Mandlakazi, passion meets purpose through the work of Monica Mathunsi, owner and coach of Sisters FC, a women’s team competing in the Limpopo Provincial Women’s League.
What began as a small village team has grown into a platform for change — a place where young women not only learn to play football but also to build their futures. Mathunsi is doing a commendable job developing players from as young as 18 years old, teaching them discipline, teamwork, and confidence — both on and off the field.
But what truly sets her apart is her commitment to education. While she trains her players to excel in football, she also ensures they take their studies seriously. Her balanced approach has opened life-changing opportunities for many of her players, who have earned bursaries and scholarships from universities such as the North-West University and the University of Limpopo.
So far, five players from Sisters FC have been awarded scholarships, with three already graduated and employed — including a lawyer and a teacher. Their success stories stand as proof of Monica’s belief that sports and education can work hand in hand to uplift communities.
Her remarkable contribution to women’s football and youth development was recognized at the 2024 Limpopo Sports Awards, where she received an award for her outstanding work.
Despite this recognition, Mathunsi continues to run Sisters FC without sponsorship, using her own limited resources to keep the dream alive. “It’s not just about playing football; it’s about building a future,” she says. “I want these girls to dream beyond the field — to become leaders, professionals, and role models in their communities.”
Sisters FC scouts new players from school football tournaments and the Victor Hlongwani Annual Tournament held in Homu village, Giyani, giving young women from rural areas a chance to develop their potential.
