Two police officials during their arrested for corruption by members of the  Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team.

The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team on Thursday arrested two police officials aged 39 and 45 years for alleged corruption at Morebeng (Soekmekaar).

It is alleged that during October 2017, both suspects, a Constable and a Sergeant were on duty at Morebeng Police Station. They received a complaint about people who were stealing timbers. They rushed to the said address, upon arrival they found three men next to a truck loaded with timber. The suspects fled from the scene and police managed to apprehend one of them.

Police allegedly demanded cash as a gratification in order for them not to effect an arrest. The suspect told the police that he does not have such amount.

It is alleged that the police officials took his items. They then told the victim to come and collect his items when he is having the money. He later handed undisclosed amount of cash to the officials and they did not give him all his belongings. The victim went to the police station to report the matter. A case of corruption was opened and transferred to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team for further handling.

After the intensive investigation, the case was handed to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for decision. The warrants of arrest were issued against the suspects. Currently the Sergeant is attached to Musina police station while Constable is attached to Westernburg police station.

The police officials were due to make their first court appearance at Morebeng Magistrate’s Court at the time of going to press.
