Former Marumo Gallants coach Mpho “Zico” Maleka has successfully completed Phase 1 of the prestigious four-phase CAF A Diploma Coaching Course, taking another major step toward one of Africa’s highest coaching qualifications.
The first phase of the program ran from 18–25 November at the Bambatha Ts’ita Sports Arena and was hosted by the Lesotho Football Association (LeFA).
The course brought together some of the continent’s top football technicians for an intensive study of advanced tactics, modern coaching methodologies, player management, and football leadership.
Designed to equip Africa’s elite coaches with cutting-edge tactical, technical, and analytical skills, the CAF A Diploma is among the most demanding coaching pathways on the continent.
Adding to the course’s prestige was the participation of Bafana Bafana assistant coach Helman “Midnight Express” Mkhelele, who joined Maleka and other high-level coaches in Lesotho.
Reflecting on his experience, Maleka described Phase 1 as transformative.
“The course was very good and enlightening,” he said, noting how the sessions broadened his tactical understanding and strengthened his approach to modern coaching.
With Phase 1 now completed, Maleka will continue to Phase 2 toward the end of January next year, followed by Phases 3 and 4 later in the program. Successful completion of all four phases will see him qualify for the prestigious CAF A Diploma, opening doors to top-tier coaching roles across the continent.
Maleka’s progress underscores his dedication to growth and his commitment to contributing to the advancement of South African football at the highest levels.
