The Mayor of Maruleng Local Municipality, Councillor Tsheko Musolwa.

Maruleng Local Municipality has once again achieved an unqualified audit opinion for the 2024/2025 financial year — marking ten consecutive years of clean financial governance as confirmed by the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA).

An unqualified audit report from the Auditor-General (or any auditor) is the highest praise, a “clean opinion,” meaning the financial statements are accurate, free from material misstatements, and comply fully with accounting standards (like GAAP/IFRS), giving stakeholders confidence in the organization’s financial health and reporting. It signals no significant problems, errors, or non-compliance, indicating fair presentation of financial position and performance.

For a public sector like the municipality, an unqualified opinion means the entity’s financials are sound, and even if there are minor legislative deviations, they aren’t significant enough to taint the overall report, which focuses on reporting predetermined objectives.

The mayor Councillor Tsheko Musolwa, says the decade-long consistency reflects the municipality’s unwavering commitment to sound financial management, transparency, and accountability.

“Maintaining an unqualified opinion for such an extended period is a rare achievement that positions Maruleng Local Municipality among the best-performing municipalities in the country in terms of financial governance,” says Musolwa.

Mayor Musolwa attributes this milestone to the resilient leadership of council and the dedication of municipal officials who continue to uphold strong governance principles.

He further indicated that the municipality is now intensifying efforts toward achieving a clean audit in the next financial year, guided by a consolidated corrective action plan with clear timeframes to address the few matters raised in the Auditor-General’s report.

“This achievement demonstrates what disciplined leadership, teamwork and accountability can deliver. Ten years is not just a number — it is proof of institutional stability and our commitment to serving the people of Maruleng with integrity,” said Mayor Musolwa.

Maruleng Local Municipality remains committed to strengthening financial integrity, enhancing regulatory compliance, and continuously improving service delivery.
