Chairman of Agriculture Development Agency (AGDA), Mathews Phosa is calling on the mining and agriculture sectors to work in tandem for economic growth.

The acclaimed political juggernaut says he has found agriculture more fulfilling as it contributes hugely to the country’s Gross Domestic Product.

Phosa says that while some may see this coexistence as a utopian pipedream, industry players should view this as an opportunity.

“The coexistence of mining and agriculture in our province will definitely result in positive spinoffs. Innovative partnership approaches can turn this potential conflict into growth opportunities that support job creation and alternate income streams for host communities. We see examples of these across the province, and as AGDA we are working closely with the Venetia team, who understand the need for an integrated, long term solutioning and are driving several new production opportunities.

Mining companies can be key partners in agricultural development and through their social responsibility programs have the potential to catalyse the development of new land under production, agro-processing opportunities and enterprise development. We must work together and leverage resources between us for greater impact for our communities and our province. Thinking about the future, our path is clear but will be challenging. We need to accelerate infrastructure development, particularly in water management and storage. We must enhance our research capabilities in climate-smart agriculture, strengthen our export logistics and cold chain facilities, expand our agricultural training programs, and develop more agro-processing facilities to add value locally,” Phosa reckons.

Phosa said AGDA’s orchestrated and programmatic approach to agricultural development is already showing remarkable results in Limpopo.

“Through our partnership network, we have facilitated significant investments in key projects. Our ability to convene and coordinate multiple stakeholders has enabled us to unlock innovative financing solutions, including working capital facilities, commercial funding, and development finance. As your partner in agricultural development, AGDA is committed to scaling up these investments. We are currently facilitating several mega-commercial transactions including in Limpopo where we will further transform our agricultural landscape. Our partnership models, including the Harvest Loan Financing SPV and various commercial partnerships.

“Through AGDA’s extensive partner network, we are not just attracting investment, we are building a sustainable ecosystem that will support Limpopo’s journey to becoming the food basket of the world. Our partnerships with mining companies, financial institutions, and agricultural businesses are creating new opportunities for value chain development, skills transfer, and market access” Phosa said.
