When Amukelani “JayJay” Hlongwani masterminded Casric Stars’ sensational Nedbank Cup victory over Orlando Pirates last weekend, it was more than just a famous upset — it was the fulfilment of a journey built on mentorship, discipline, and belief.
For Mpheni Defenders owner and head coach Sydney Phuravhathu, the moment was deeply personal. Watching his former protégé outsmart one of South Africa’s football giants filled him with immense pride.
Casric Stars delivered a tactical masterclass, completely shutting down Orlando Pirates’ attacking threat, forcing the match to a 0–0 draw in normal time before winning 5–4 on penalties, sending shockwaves through South African football.
Forged at Mpheni Defenders, Hlongwani’s rise began at Mpheni Defenders, where he worked closely with the experienced Sydney Phuravhathu. Together, they built a side known for exciting football, tactical discipline, and dominance in the ABC Motsepe League Stream A.
Their team controlled matches, topped the standings, and became one of the most feared sides in the league, falling short only in the playoffs — twice — narrowly missing promotion. Yet, those setbacks refined Hlongwani’s tactical sharpness and leadership maturity.
It was during this time that he gained exposure to true competitive football, shaping the coach he is today.
His impressive work soon earned him a move to Baroka FC in the NFD, where he initially served as assistant coach. His impact was immediate, as Baroka displayed renewed structure, organisation, and confidence.
On several occasions, Hlongwani stepped in as caretaker coach, delivering crucial victories and stability during challenging periods. Each opportunity reinforced his growing reputation as a calm, intelligent, and results-driven tactician.
Wherever “JayJay” goes, progress follows. National Recognition at Casric Stars
Now at Casric Stars, Hlongwani’s tactical brilliance has earned him national recognition. Eliminating Orlando Pirates from the Nedbank Cup is not just a win — it is a statement of intent.
His team displayed exceptional discipline, organisation, and fearless belief, neutralising one of the country’s most potent attacking units.
Phuravhathu could not hide his joy:“I am very happy for him, and we keep in touch every day,” he said. The bond between mentor and student remains strong — a relationship rooted in guidance, trust, and shared football values.
Amukelani “JayJay” Hlongwani is undoubtedly one of South Africa’s brightest coaching prospects. His journey from Mpheni Defenders to the national spotlight stands as a powerful testament to hard work, humility, and mentorship.
And as his star continues to rise, Phuravhathu watches proudly, knowing that part of JayJay’s success was forged at Mpheni.
