ABC Motsepe League side Tzaneen United have thrown themselves back into the championship conversation following a crucial 1–0 victory over Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila at the Nkowankowa Stadium last Saturday.

The hard-fought home win marked new coach Humphrey Mlwane’s first victory working alongside co-coach Siyabonga Bhembe, a result that has restored belief within the Maruleng-based outfit after a brief dip in form threatened to derail what had been a promising start to the season.

Tzaneen United began their campaign in impressive fashion, registering four consecutive victories that quickly established them as early title contenders. However, their momentum slowed after a 1–1 draw against Mukondeni Young Chiefs, a result that was followed by back-to-back defeats against league leaders Mpheni Defenders (1–0) and Vondwe XI Bullets, who beat them 3–1.

Those results saw Tzaneen lose ground in the title race, but last weekend’s win over TTM has reignited their challenge. Although Mpheni Defenders still lead the log by six points, their recent draw against Badhuza Celtics has opened the door for the chasing pack.

Tzaneen United currently sit second on the table and will be eager to capitalise on any further slip-ups from the leaders. Breathing down their necks, however, is a formidable Phalaborwa United side who have developed a reputation for grinding out victories and maintaining consistency.

The stakes could not be higher this weekend as Tzaneen United travel to Phalaborwa to face United in what promises to be a decisive encounter. A defeat would see Tzaneen drop to third place, while a victory would significantly reduce the gap at the top and keep their title ambitions firmly alive.

With a squad boasting quality and depth, Tzaneen United have shown that they possess the tools to challenge for honours. Their resurgence has also sent a clear message to log leaders Mpheni Defenders that the championship race is far from over.

As the ABC Motsepe League season gathers pace, Tzaneen United appear determined to make their presence felt once again—setting the stage for what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested title battle.
