Tzaneen United were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw at home against Mukondeni Young Chiefs in a high-stakes ABC Motsepe League Stream A encounter at Nkowankowa Stadium — a result that does little to close the gap at the top of the table.
Both sides entered the fixture knowing that maximum points were essential to keep pace with log leaders Mpheni Defenders, who remain firmly in control of the standings. Mpheni currently sit eight points ahead of Tzaneen United and eleven clear of Mukondeni Young Chiefs, making every remaining fixture critical in the title race.
The visitors struck first in the opening half, asserting early dominance and looking the more threatening side going forward. Mukondeni’s confidence grew after the breakthrough, and they appeared likely to extend their lead before the break.
However, the second half told a different story.
Tzaneen United returned from the interval with renewed intensity and purpose, pressing higher and committing more bodies forward in search of an equalizer. Their intent was further emphasized by the introduction of star attacker William “Wicho” Bopape, a move that injected urgency and creativity into their attack.
The tactical adjustment paid off when Tzaneen found the back of the net through a well-taken free kick by Shanisane Mchavi, also known as “Muxe na Bolo,” bringing the home crowd back into the contest.
Just as momentum seemed to swing in Tzaneen’s favor, Mukondeni Young Chiefs responded with resilience. In the dying moments of the match, the Joel Mongalo-led side regained the lead, seemingly sealing a vital away victory.
But the drama was far from over.
Refusing to concede defeat, Tzaneen United intensified their pressure in the closing stages. A key tactical shift saw Bopape moved from the left wing — where he appeared less effective — to his more natural right side. The change proved decisive, as he became more influential, creating chances and stretching the opposition defense.
With less than ten minutes remaining, Tzaneen capitalized on their sustained pressure, with Shanisane Mchavi once again stepping up to score his second of the match and secure a crucial equalizer for the hosts.
The match ended 2-2, leaving both teams frustrated as they missed an opportunity to gain ground on the leaders.
The result is even more significant considering that Mpheni Defenders were held to a 2-2 draw by Selwane White Vultures — despite playing with ten men after a red card and trailing 2-1 at one stage. It was a rare slip from the leaders, offering chasing teams a chance to close the gap — an opportunity neither Tzaneen nor Mukondeni fully seized.
As the season progresses, dropped points in matches like these could prove decisive in the race for promotion, leaving both sides with work to do if they are to challenge Mpheni Defenders at the summit.
