The pride of Limpopo football, Mpheni Defenders, were crowned the 2026 ABC Motsepe League Limpopo champions after defeating Ngwaabe City Motors 1-0 in the provincial promotional playoffs final at Seshego Stadium last Saturday.
Mpheni Defenders, who emerged as Stream A winners, once again proved the dominance of Stream A in Limpopo football after overcoming Stream B champions Ngwaabe City Motors in a tightly contested encounter.
The decisive moment came in the 75th minute when Mpheni scored the solitary goal of the match through a powerful header, sending their supporters into wild celebrations and sealing the provincial championship title.
By winning the final, Mpheni Defenders walked away with R100 000 in prize money, gold medals, and the prestigious ABC Motsepe League Limpopo champions trophy.
The victory has further strengthened the belief among many football followers that Stream A remains more competitive and stronger than Stream B, as provincial champions have consistently emerged from Stream A over the years.
Mpheni Defenders are now shifting their focus to the upcoming national promotional playoffs in the Eastern Cape, where they will battle for promotion to the National First Division.
Their quest for promotion comes at a crucial time for Limpopo football, especially after the province lost two important National First Division statuses following the relegation of Baroka FC and Black Leopards. The possible promotion of Mpheni Defenders would therefore not only be a major achievement for the club, but also a boost for football in Limpopo as the province seeks to restore its presence in the country’s top professional divisions.
Judging by their impressive performances throughout the season, many believe this could finally be the year Mpheni Defenders secure long-awaited promotion to the second tier of South African football.
The team has shown consistency, discipline, and determination during their campaign, qualities that could make them strong contenders in the national playoffs. Supporters across Limpopo will now be hoping the club can continue its remarkable run and represent the province with pride on the national stage.
