LIMPOPO champions Mpheni Defenders are preparing for one of the biggest moments in the club’s history as the 2026 ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs kick off on Monday in the Eastern Cape.

The eagerly-awaited national playoffs, scheduled to take place from June 1 to June 7 at Mthatha Stadium, will determine which teams gain promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, South Africa’s second-tier professional division.

Mpheni Defenders have been drawn in a challenging Group C alongside Northern Cape outfit NC Professionals and a representative from KwaZulu-Natal, whose provincial champion is still to be confirmed due to ongoing arbitration matters.

The Limpopo side heads into the tournament carrying the hopes of football supporters from the province after an impressive campaign in the provincial league. The club has shown resilience, attacking football and strong team unity throughout the season, qualities they will hope to carry into the national playoffs.

The playoffs are expected to attract massive attention from football followers across the country, with nine provincial champions battling for only two promotion spots.

Group A consists of NWU Soccer Institute from North West, a team from Mpumalanga and Gauteng, while Group B features Setpoint Swifts, also known as Hope FC, FC Ravens from the Eastern Cape and Mangaung Unite from the Free State.

The champions of each group, together with the best-performing side overall, will advance to the decisive stages of the competition as teams fight for a place in professional football.

Despite being drawn against unfamiliar opposition, Mpheni Defenders are believed to be confident ahead of the tournament. Club supporters have already started rallying behind the team, hoping the Limpopo outfit can make history by securing promotion.

Football analysts believe discipline, experience and mental strength will play a major role in the tournament, especially with matches expected to come thick and fast over the week-long competition.

The unresolved disputes in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Mpumalanga have also added intrigue to this year’s playoffs, with some provincial representatives still to be officially confirmed.

For Mpheni Defenders, however, the focus remains firmly on preparation and delivering results on the field.

As the countdown to Mthatha begins, Limpopo football fans will be hoping Mpheni Defenders can rise to the occasion and bring national success back home.
