The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) officially launched the 2026 Local Government Elections for the Limpopo province on Thursday at the Protea Hotel, Polokwane Ranch Resort.

The event gathered key stakeholders, including government officials, traditional leaders, and political party representatives, to mark the beginning of preparations for the polls scheduled for November 4, 2026.

The programme featured a detailed presentation on the state of readiness for the upcoming elections by Electoral Operations Manager Mr. Itumeleng Seanego. Provincial Electoral Officer Ms. Nkaro Mateta provided a comprehensive overview of the electoral processes, emphasizing the importance of logistical planning and infrastructure.

Representing Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA), Mr. Basikopo Makamu, delivered a strong message of support. MEC Makamu stated that the provincial government is fully committed to the success of the elections.

He noted that the government is already auditing municipal infrastructure, such as community halls and schools, to ensure that all designated voting centres are properly equipped with water, electricity, and sanitation for registration weekends and election day.

The event highlighted the IEC’s campaign theme, “Get Up, Show Up, Vote”. In his address, MEC Makamu issued a specific appeal to the youth of Limpopo, urging them to register during the upcoming registration weekend on June 20 and 21, 2026. He emphasised that participating in the democratic process is the most effective way for young people to influence the future of their communities and address local challenges like unemployment.

Keynote speaker Commissioner Glen Mashinini was recognised for his leadership in guiding the commission toward these elections. MEC Makamu also called on all participating political parties to conduct their campaigns with dignity, mutual respect, and tolerance, underscoring Limpopo’s reputation as a peaceful province.

The launch concluded with a commitment from the provincial government to provide the necessary logistical, administrative, and moral support to ensure that the 2026 Local Government Elections are free, fair, and credible.
