Peter Ngobeni, the spokesperson for the ANC in the Norman Mashabane Region.
The Mopani Times has received the comments made by Peter Ngobeni, the spokesperson for the ANC in the Norman Mashabane Region, regarding our recent coverage of the political climate within the organization.
We acknowledge his claim that our reporting amounts to what he termed gutter journalism. We feel it is necessary to respond clearly to our readers and the public.
As a media organization, our primary duty is to the public interest. Our role is to report on events that affect our communities, regardless of whether those events are positive or negative for political parties. When we report on internal divisions, the resignation of senior leaders, or disputes over candidate lists, we are not creating conflict. We are simply recording public developments that directly impact how our region is governed.
It is common for those in positions of power to feel uncomfortable when their internal processes face public scrutiny. However, democratic accountability relies on transparency. When a political party is divided, those divisions affect the delivery of services, the stability of municipal councils, and ultimately, the lives of ordinary citizens. It is our responsibility to shed light on these matters.
We operate under strict ethical standards. Our process involves verifying facts through multiple sources, checking documents, and consistently offering the people we cover a fair opportunity to respond to our findings before we publish. We do not invent stories, and we do not pursue agendas. If a political organization is suffering from internal decline, it is not the fault of the newspaper that reports on it. The reality of the situation remains the same whether it is written in a newspaper or not.
To demonstrate our commitment to fairness, we previously sent five questions to Mr. Ngobeni for a written response, providing a deadline of one week for his input. It has now been a week since that deadline passed, and Mr. Ngobeni has failed to provide any response or show any willingness to engage with our inquiries.
We respect the right of any organization to disagree with our coverage. However, labelling legitimate public interest journalism as gutter journalism while simultaneously refusing to engage with direct questions does not address the underlying issues currently facing the ANC in this region. We invite Mr. Ngobeni and the regional leadership to engage with the facts we have presented rather than attacking the messenger.
The Mopani Times remains committed to providing truthful, accurate, and fair reporting. We will continue to inform our readers about the developments that shape our democracy because the public deserves to know the truth.
