Experienced coach Mashoto Malesa was unveiled by Baduzah Celtics as the newest member of the club’s technical team.

PHALABORWA – Professional football could be making a dramatic return to Mopani after ABC Motsepe League Stream A side Badhuza Celtics were strongly linked with the purchase of Upington City’s National First Division (NFD) status.

While the club has yet to officially confirm the move, recent developments have sent local football supporters into a frenzy.

Badhuza Celtics recently hosted player trials at the Badhuza Sports Complex from 14 to 17 July, with the official poster boldly advertising the event as “Trials for NFD Players” – a move that has only strengthened speculation that the Phalaborwa outfit is preparing for life in South Africa’s second-tier professional league.

The club has also wasted no time in strengthening its technical team after unveiling experienced coach Mashoto Malesa, another indication that major plans could be underway.

Should the deal materialise, it would mark the return of professional football to Mopani for the first time in several years and provide a massive boost for football development in the district.

The region has previously been represented in the NFD by Matsena Giant Killers of Sekgosese, Dynamos from Giyani, City Pillars of Nkowankowa and Winners Park of Bellevue before the club relocated to Polokwane.

The arrival of another professional club would also create a pathway for talented footballers from Mopani to showcase their abilities closer to home instead of seeking opportunities elsewhere.

However, one major question remains unanswered: What will happen to Badhuza Celtics’ ABC Motsepe League status?

If the acquisition is completed, the club could either retain its ABC Motsepe League status under a separate structure or sell it to another interested party. No official decision has been communicated.

For now, supporters can only wait for confirmation, but if the rumours prove true, Badhuza Celtics could soon become the newest professional club in Limpopo and restore Mopani’s place on South Africa’s professional football map.

Baduzah Celtics’ poster advertising trials for NFD players has fuelled rumours that the club is set to acquire an NFD status.
