The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, popularly known as the Hawks, has made a major breakthrough in a multi-million rand corruption case in Limpopo.
Members of the Serious Corruption Investigation team have arrested a 37-year-old suspect linked to an alleged R45 million fraud, corruption, and money laundering scheme involving the Mogalakwena Local Municipality.
The arrest follows an extensive probe into a fleet management tender that was advertised and awarded by the municipality in 2022. Investigators uncovered that the procurement process was allegedly not conducted in accordance with prescribed legal procedures. Early findings suggest that the municipality suffered potential financial prejudice estimated at R45 million.
Investigators are currently tracing the money trail to identify all individuals and private businesses linked to the tender. As part of this process, authorities have already identified a legal entity connected to the arrested suspect.
The suspect is scheduled to make a first court appearance before the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court on 17 September 2026.
Law enforcement authorities emphasized that this arrest is only the beginning. The Hawks warned that the investigation remains active and ongoing, with more arrests expected as officers pursue outstanding leads and gather further evidence.
To strengthen their case, the Hawks have appealed to members of the public who may possess information about the tender to step forward. Officials promised that all submitted information will be handled with strict confidentiality within the rules of the law.
The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Limpopo, Major General Gopz Govender, stated that the operation reflects the unit’s determination to safeguard municipal resources. He noted that public funds must never be turned into private wealth.
“Every rand entrusted to a municipality carries the hopes and needs of the people it is meant to serve,” Govender said. “When that trust is allegedly betrayed, the Hawks will not look away. We will follow the evidence, follow the money and follow every lead, regardless of where it takes us. Those who have abused public resources must know that the law has a long reach. We will act without fear or favour, firmly, professionally, and within the law.”
The Hawks continue their work in Limpopo to root out public sector corruption and ensure accountability for municipal funds.
