Greater Tzaneen Municipality Mayor Councillor Odas Ngobeni has demonstrated his support for community sport by handing over a soccer kit to the Golden Gogos Soccer Team at the Nkowankowa Section C Sports Ground.
Ngobeni was accompanied by Speaker of Council Cllr Sanie Tiba and Executive Committee Member responsible for Sports, Arts and Culture, Cllr Renny Mabuza, during the handover.
The Golden Gogos, made up of grandmothers who continue to participate in football, received the kit as part of the municipality’s support for community sport and the participation of women in physical activity.
The handover comes during Ngobeni’s first year in office and highlights the municipality’s willingness to support sporting initiatives involving members of the community across different age groups.
For the Golden Gogos, football is about more than competition. Their participation provides an opportunity to remain active, socialise and encourage other women to embrace an active lifestyle.
The team’s involvement in football also offers a powerful example of women continuing to participate in sport regardless of age, while promoting health, camaraderie and community spirit.
The presence of the mayor, council speaker and the councillor responsible for Sports, Arts and Culture at the handover underlined the municipality’s recognition of the role sport can play in bringing communities together.
With their new kit, the Golden Gogos will now be able to take to the field with renewed pride as they continue their football activities in Nkowankowa.
