Mmakgoshi Josephine Sekgopo is contemplating to take the chieftaincy battle to the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein.
The protracted legal battle for the Sekgopo chieftaincy will descend to Bloemfontein where it will be heard in the Supreme Court of Apeal.
Mmakgoshi Josephine Sekgopo says she is considering to take the long-running Sekgopo chieftaincy dispute to the Supreme Court of Appeal following the latest court ruling.
The latest judgment upheld Matsorwane Sekgopo II’s cross-appeal with costs, while dismissing the cross-appeal brought by the Sekgopo Royal Family with costs.
In 2021, the Kgatla Commission recommended William Matsorwane to be senior traditional leader of Sekgopo and Traditional Authority.
The Kgatla recommendation stated that William status should be undisturbed, that then premier,Stan Mathabatha’s rejection be set aside, and theat he must reconsider the matter afresh.
Mathabatha himself did not oppose – he withdrew opposition on 21 July 2022 and said he will abide the court decision.
“The ball is back with the Premier of Limpopo. He/She must now reconsider the Kgatla Commission recommendation that William Sekgopo be appointed as Senior Traditional Leader and make a new decision;” the recommendation read in parts.
The court further ordered that the matter be remitted to the Limpopo Premier for reconsideration.
The Sekgopo Royal Family has indicated that it intends to pursue the matter further in the Supreme Court of Appeal.
Royal family spokesperson Mailula Hepter said the family believes the dispute should be resolved through a trial rather than a commission.
“This matter needs a trial, not a commission. Political and traditional leadership don’t mix,” Hepter said.
The Sekgopo chieftaincy dispute has been ongoing for several years, with competing claims over the traditional leadership position previously considered through court proceedings and other processes.
The Sekgopo chieftaincy is among the myriad inundated with disputes over the thrones.
Their battle rage on, with no glimmer of hope for finding the rightful heir to the throne.
