The recent discovery of a 22-year-old female University of Limpopo student has sent shockwaves across the campus community.
The lifeless body was found near the university’s perimeter fence in Mankweng on October 04 at about 06:00.
Police discovered her along Sovenga Street during their routine patrols.
She was found partially clothed, with her head positioned inside a trench next to the fence. Police said there were no visible external injuries at the scene.
Her bag, containing her ID and NSFAS card, was found nearby.
One the students, who said she knew the deceased intimately, said the recent incident has gripped the whole tertiary institution with fear, especially female students.
Martha Mokobobodi, a second year accounting student,says the death of their fellow student has triggered fear amid a spade of femicide in the country.
Over 10 women have been gruesomely murdered in Ekurhuleni area, Gauteng.
“We are fearing for our live now. Ever since then, every woman is paralysed with fear. While we are not sure about the circumstances surrounding her death, we fell that we are under siege,” she says.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba says police Mankweng have opened an inquest docket following them discovery the dead woman. .
“Police were on patrol duties when they received information about a female victim found lying motionless along the campus fence and rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, they found the body of the female victim partially clothed with her head positioned inside a trench adjacent to the fence.
“The body was inspected and no visible external injuries were observed at the scene. A bag containing the deceased’s identity document and NSFAS card was found next to the body,” says Mashaba.
He says members of the Emergency Medical Services were called and declared the woman dead upon arrival at the scene.
Mashaba says it is suspected that the deceased may have accidentally fallen into the trench and the exact circumstances surrounding her death are under investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Petra Tsebe.
