The Greater Letaba Municipality received four awards during the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) 2022/23 Municipal Awards ceremony held at Fusion Botique Hotel in Polokwane on Tuesday.
The first award is for 100% Municipal Infrastructure (MIG) spending, the second award for 100% MIG spending and receiving additional allocation, followed by 100% spending on MIG additional allocation and the fourth one is for sustaining Unqualified Audit Opinion from the Auditor General for 2022/23 financial year.
An unqualified opinion is an independent auditor‘s judgment that the municipality’s financial statements are fairly and appropriately presented, without any identified exceptions, and in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
The Greater Letaba Municipality team led by Head of Finance Portfolio Councillor Thabo Kgapane was ecstatic to be amongst to top award receivers of the night.
The team work shown by the municipality, including the dedication in rendering effective service delivery has afforded the municipality such accolades.
Sound financial capacity was what was celebrated throughout the night, and GLM came out on top.
“The municipality is able to get these many accolades only because it is able to spend on all projects allocated through the MIG, which translates to effective service delivery to the residents of Greater Letaba Municipality,” said Municipal Spokesperson, Lovers Maenetje.
Maenetje said that is was for the first time, the municipality gets four awards from SALGA. “The highest we got was three last year which means we are growing, we are working hard and there is commitment on the ground to deliver service and that commitment is being fulfilled,” she added.
Accompanying the head of portfolio was the Municipal Manager Obed Sewape and the Acting Chief Financial Officer, Anna Sesene.
The municipality was praised for the sterling work shown under the leadership of Mayor, Councillor Dagma Mamanyoha.
Meanwhile, The Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) scooped three recognition awards.
The municipality was honored for sustaining an unqualified audit for four consecutive years, achieving 100% spending on the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), and the Greater Tzaneen Economic Development Agency (GTEDA)’s consistent attainment of clean audits. GTEDA, a subsidiary wholly owned by GTM, has been instrumental in driving economic growth and development in the region.
The awards were graciously accepted by Mayor Gerson Molapisane, Councillor Thabo Maunatlala (Head of Finance), Cate Ntimbani (Director Community Services), Marius Maeta (Chief Financial Officer), and Velly Mulaudzi (GTEDA Acting CEO), underscoring GTM’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and service excellence.
Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality was recognized at the SALGA Municipal Awards for achieving 100% Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) funding for the 2022/2023 financial year.
This award acknowledges the effective financial management and commitment to infrastructure development.
Mayor, Cllr Merriam Malatji welcomed the award indicating that it will restore public confidence.
“This is a great accomplishment for the municipality and a testament to the hard work,” said Mayor Malatji.
Greater Giyani Municipality got an award for Sustained Unqualified Audit Outcome. The Municipality’s delegation includes the Mayor Councillor Thandi Zitha, Speaker Cllr Mboweni Agrey, Finance Portfolio Head Cllr Ndaba Nkhensani, Municipal Manager, Mr Vusi Khoza, and Chief Financial Officer Fedium Nkuna.
Mopani walked away with SALGA 2022/2023 Most Improved Audit Performance.
