Mpheni Defenders FC sent a clear message to the ABC Motsepe League this past Saturday, defeating arch-rivals Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) 2–0Thohoyandou Stadium. The victory not only avenged their narrow 1–0 Nedbank Cup exit earlier this year but also showcased a team determined to defend its crown with authority.
From the first whistle, Mpheni looked composed, disciplined, and tactically astute against a traditionally physical and formidable TTM side. The team’s sharp attacking movement and defensive organisation were on full display, thrilling an energetic Venda crowd that came out in support.
The first goal arrived in the 15th minute, with a perfectly timed header from a well-positioned Mahlatse “Shoes” Leso converting a set piece. Mpheni sealed the result late in the second half with a clinical finish from the wing by Lufuno “Okocha” Mulaudzi, leaving the TTM goalkeeper with no chance and confirming the Bulls’ dominance.
The win propels Mpheni to the top of the ABC Motsepe League Stream A, with six points from two matches, edging second-placed Tzaneen United on goal difference. Known for their consistency and dominance, the defending champions are making it clear that they intend to maintain their legacy.
Mpheni’s coach Zungu Nkosi, who had boldly promised to “correct the injustice” of the Nedbank Cup loss, expressed pride in his players’ performance:
“This was not just a match—it was about restoring our pride. The boys were focused, hungry, and disciplined. We respected TTM, but today we showed our true quality,” he said.
Mpheni now turns their attention to Phalaborwa United, who come into the clash having won their opening game but lost their second match last week. While the newcomers have shown flashes of quality, Mpheni is preparing to assert control on their home turf.
Owner Sydwell Phurabhatho weighed in on the upcoming fixture:
“Phalaborwa is a well-organised team with experienced players, and it’s going to be a tough encounter for both teams. We need to bring our A-game in front of our supporters. We don’t know much about them, but we expect some individual players to stand out.”
Mpheni’s coach echoed the sentiment, stressing the importance of respect and preparation:
“United are a strong side and should not be taken for granted. They will be even more dangerous coming from a defeat. But we are ready. We respect every opponent, and we will prepare with the same intensity.”
As the ABC Motsepe League season gathers momentum, Mpheni Defenders have sent a loud and clear message: they are here to defend their title, and they are doing it with style, precision, and the hunger of champions.
