Baroka FC

Limpopo’s two National First Division (NFD) representatives, Baroka FC and Black Leopards, are facing an uphill battle as the league moves into the second round, with both former Premier Soccer League (PSL) sides languishing at the bottom of the log.

Baroka are currently placed 15th with 14 points from 17 matches, while Black Leopards are rooted to the foot of the table in 16th position with 12 points from 16 games. The seriousness of their situation was underlined last weekend when the two Limpopo rivals played to a 1–1 draw in a derby that offered pride but little relief in the relegation fight.

Just above the drop zone, Midlands Wanderers FC sit in 14th place with 17 points from 17 games. The Bees are positioned 13th, while Gomora United occupy 12th spot, with both sides tied on 19 points after 17 matches. With such slim margins separating the teams, the battle to avoid relegation is set to intensify as the season progresses.

The current struggles are a far cry from where both clubs have been before. Baroka and Black Leopards are not only traditional heavyweights in Limpopo football but are also former PSL campaigners, having previously competed at the highest level of South African football. Their presence at the bottom of the NFD table highlights just how challenging this season has been.

Despite their difficult start, there remains hope. Baroka were involved in the promotional play-offs last season, a clear indication of their potential to challenge near the top of the division. Both Baroka and Leopards are also known for strong second-round performances, having previously finished within the top-four bracket during the latter stages of the league. That pedigree could yet prove crucial in their survival fight.

The next round of fixtures could be pivotal. Black Leopards face a tough away assignment against Gomora United, while Baroka are set to take on the Bees next weekend. Victories in these matches would narrow the points gap and significantly strengthen their chances of moving away from the relegation zone.

With Venda FC currently flying the Limpopo flag in sixth position, the province will be hoping its struggling giants can draw on their experience and history. For Baroka FC and Black Leopards, the second round now represents a chance for redemption — failure to respond could see Limpopo lose two of its proud former PSL clubs from the NFD.
